Who can apply
Smart&Start Italy supports small innovative startups incorporated no more than 60 months earlier and registered in the special section of the Companies Register. Eligible teams planning to incorporate, and other categories listed by Invitalia, may also apply. Projects must have substantial technological content and be based in Italy. Eligible business plans include expenses from €100,000 to €1.5 million; applicants should also test the plan’s affordability.
The four assessment criteria
Invitalia attributes 30% to the team’s technical, organisational and management skills; 20% to the innovative nature of the idea; 30% to economic and financial sustainability, including market prospects; and 20% to technological and operational feasibility. These are assessment weights, not grant percentages or a promise of approval.
What the business plan should show
Document each team member’s experience and role, customer need, competitive difference, market segments and sales channels. Link revenue forecasts to credible evidence and timing. Explain costs, funding needs, product development, suppliers and operational milestones. The guide also calls for a concise PPT pitch of no more than 15 pages, consistent with the business plan.
Dates, deadline and submission
As checked on 2 October 2026, Invitalia marks the measure active and open on a rolling basis: there is no general deadline, but applications depend on available funds. Applications are submitted only through Invitalia’s personal online area with the business plan and required attachments. Digital identity, digital signature and certified email are required. Check the current portal status and instructions before submission.
Practical next step
Cross-check every claim in the pitch against the business plan, budget and market evidence. Verify expense eligibility and how the non-financed portion will be covered. The application is assessed as a whole and further information may be requested; support is never automatic.
